One of the objectives of the project Candle Wisdom is to discover and learn about the cultures, literatures and languages of the partner countries. It is in this sense that this small book Tales & Legends appears, with two versions: in English and Portuguese. It is a small collection of two stories from the oral and written tradition of Portugal and two legends from our region, the Madeira Archipelago.
Thus, the availability of this literary collection will allow students of the partner schools to get to know some of the traditional Portuguese literature.
The work of research, illustration, preparation and translation into English of these tales and legends by the students and teachers of our school involved several areas of knowledge and took place in the 2018/2019 school year.
The story The Stone Soup is associated with an oral tale being widely known and with several versions in different countries.
The traditional tale Salt and Water is part of the work The Traditional Tales of the Portuguese People (1883), by Teófilo Braga, renamed Portuguese author of the second half of the nineteenth century and first decades of the twentieth century.
The Legend of Saint Sylvester and the Legend of Machim are part of the Madeiran oral tradition, being at the origin of the famous fireworks at the end of the year, in the first case, and the origin of the name of the city of Machico (Madeira), in the second.
